Wk 13 – Artist Conversation – Carmina Correa

Artist: Carmina Correa

Exhibition: C12H22O11

Media: Sugar, Molds

Gallery: Dennis W. Dutzi Gallery

Website: N/A

About the artist

Carmina Correa is a student at California State University, Long Beach an she is a senior in the sculpture program. The primary goal for Carmen’s exhibit is to bring attention to the growing epidemic in the United states, which is Diabetes. Specifically for this exhibit it showcases the characteristics of type 2 diabetes.

Formal analysis

The artist Carmina primarily used real sugar for all her works of art in the gallery. Each lollipop had a glucose level strip which is routinely used by individuals with diabetes to check their glucose levels in their blood. Around the walls there were lollipops lined up about a foot from each other each with a strip inside. In the middle of the exhibit there was a green sugar rock and a black mold. In the corners were ramen packets made of sugar.

Content analysis

To the artist Carmina the making of this project was a type of therapy. Due to her diabetes she is limited to eating and monitoring the amount of sugar in her body. Because of this she tried to used substantial amounts of sugar in the exhibit, and also due to the fact that it is a cheap material.

My experience

This exhibit was one on the more coolers ones because of what the pieces of art in the middle were actually made of. At the same time it is also informative because I used to be at risk to diabetes because of family. I found it really funny how there was a line of ants marching from one of the corners of the room to the center sugar piece.

Exhibition: WORK: It’s a four letter word

Website: N/A

Instagram: N/A

About the Artist

Travis Lober is currently a student attending California State University, Long Beach. He is pursuing in a bachelors of fine arts in print making. Before pursuing print making Travis worked in the construction field which draws great inspiration for his current exhibit. He loves tools and machinery because it gives him the ability to build things. He also believes that construction is a form of art.

Formal Analysis

Travis mainly uses wooden boards and wooded frames to hold up his prints. The main focus of his art was construction and how tools could be implemented into construction. Travis uses few amounts of colors in his arts for the frames and in the actual prints they are very vivid using mostly cold colors.

Content Analysis

Travis’s main reason for this exhibit is to showcase his former field and the beauty of it. Tools reminisce with Travis because it reminds him of the atmosphere of a construction site.

Synthesis/ My Experience

The exhibit really reminded me of a warehouse because of all the wood and cold black and white colors. It had a home depot kind of feel too. I really liked the smell of the exhibit too because it smelled like wood shavings. Overall it was a really good exhibit.

Wk11- Artist Conversation- Yujia Gu

Artist: Yujia Gu

Exhibition: Tracing

Media: Vinyl, multimedia, photography

Gallery: CSULB School of Art, Dutzi Gallery

Website: yujiagu.squarespace.com

About the Artist

Yujia Gu is a student here at California State University, Long Beach. It is her last semester pursuing a Masters of Fine Arts in print making. Hey professional goal is to pursuit a career in news and news papers. Initially Yujia was from Beijing, China where she earned her bachelors degree, but she moved her to attend CSULB. It is her third year in the US overall and she states that she has enjoyed every bit of her experience here. In her free time she likes to explore our small little city and enjoy nature in hikes. She enjoys the academic freedom here at long beach compared to chines structures.

Formal Analysis

Yujia makes a bold statement against gun violence in her exhibit. She highlights the effects of gun violence and shootings in the US particularly noting the mass shootings at public places. Of her art pierces there are wall arts that show the statistics due to gun violence. There is a map listing recent mass shooting. There is a memorial wall with victims. There were also TVs for additional effect. The main colors used were black and white; however, it seemed like the color red was used sparely to make a point.

Content Analysis

The main source of inspiration for this exhibit stems from Yujia’s mother. Her mothers own concerns for her daughter was the source of this. Because of a very tight close nit relationship between the two Yujia constantly contacts her mother on a daily basis. The reason being is that there has been a rise in gun violence against international students and student recently. The main point of this gallery was to rise awareness on gun violence and bring notice to the paradox where more people are buying guns to protect themselves from these incidents, but also more incidents stem from buying guns.

Synthesis/ My Experience

A very morbid but important gallery this week. I’ve been very under informed when it come to news recently and when I started using twitter again following some news sources I’ve just begun to notice the trends in shootings. It is almost everyday that there is an incident in the US and many in our state. It is good that someone is attempting to bring this issue to the masses.

Wk 10 – Artist Conversation- Clare Samani

Artist: Clare Samani

Exhibition: Dressed
Media: Printmaking, clothes
Gallery: School of Art, Merlino Gallery
Website: N/A
Instagram: clares_printing

About the Artist

Clare Samani is on her senior year at California State University Long Beach. She is pursuing her degree in Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking. After her she graduates from CSULB she wants to press onto graduate school at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Clare states that her interest in art began in her childhood years where she would always be drawing, which was pretty much her hobbies.

Formal Analysis

Clare’s exhibition featured mainly paintings and images of dresses flowing. It displayed a contrast between the background and the dress, often contrasting each other. The backgrounds were mainly dark, whereas the dresses had different patterns on them having polka dot pattern, zig zag pattern, and more complex pasterns.

Content Analysis

One of the main inspirations from one of Clare’s paintings was the White dress shirt. The story behind it is that it was a shirt she found lying on campus. Most of Clare’s paintings share a similar story as she is infatuated with fashion. She finds inspiration from others in person, such as friends or random people.

Synthesis / My Experience

I chose this exhibit not because I was personally interested in dresses. But because it’s something I really don’t put any thought into. This relates because in a few days I’m going to this banquet and I have to dress up and I recently got blasted by my girlfriends because she was talking to me about what dress she should wear and I really didn’t care since they all look the same to me. But overall, the exhibit was really interesting.

Wk9- ARTIST CONVERSATION- David DeSantis

Artist: David DeSantis

Exhibition: Day Dreamer

Media: paper, ink, screen printing , flexiglass

Gallery: Dr. Maxine Merlino Gallery

Website: N/A

Instagram: rapturefineart

About the Artist

David DeSantis is currently a fourth year in California State University, Long Beach pursing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking. What sets apart David from the other artists at the gallery was that his art draws inspiration from music and its abstracts. David has a passion for decorating motorcycles and it was even his original plan when going into college. Since then he has expanded to customizing other things such as boards.

Formal Analysis

A lot of David’s art seem to have drawn inspiration from music. Some draw it from the rhythm or beat showcasing a variation of lines. Others draw from the title emphasizing on its topic. All of David’s art are drawn 2D on paper utilizing ink.

Content Analysis

I took interest in David’s abstract art the most.As previously stated David’s art draws inspiration from many different things resulting in it being abstract. Using ink on paper, there are seemingly jagged lines that appear to be random; however, under closer inspecting those jagged lines start to smooth out and the nature of the line begins to follow a path.

Synthesis/ My Experience

Kyuubi_attack_on_Konoha

On of my favorite pieces was the simple black and white lined one because it was very reminiscent of a show that just ended that I have been watching since I was a kid, Naruto. The spiral of white lines resembles the tails of a fox. My initial experience was that I liked this exhibit because it was one of the first simple yet intriguing exhibitions we have seen in a while.

Wk 7 – ARTIST CONVERSATION – Juliana Bustillo and Tidawhitney Lek

Artist: Juliana Bustillo and Tidawhitney Lek

Exhibition: Doodles in Space

Media: Mixed Media, Installation

Gallery: CSULB School of Art, Werby Gallery

Website: N/A

Instagram: @juliaanaaaab @tidawhitney

About the Artist

There were two artists to this art installation, Juliana Bustillo and Tidawhiteney Lek both attend California State University Long Beach. Both are pursuing a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting. Interestingly enough, there are many similarities between the two artist, they both started doodling and drawing at a very young age, they were both raised locally, and both are seniors.

Formal Analysis

The purpose of the art was probably to an immersion factor that forces the viewer to explore every aspect of the room. Since this project was on such a large of a scale, the entire room being used from to bottom, there were many materials used such as paper, wires, plastic, and even electronics used to manipulate the light. Although there were many materials used, the exhibit only featured two colors, black and white. The floors were mainly black with an arching white for contrast, there were piles of black and white clusters around the room, a large chandelier type decoration was hanging, and as mentioned before there was a manipulation of light that further added to the immersion into the art.

Content Analysis

When walking into the art exhibit you feel like you are entering another world. Since both of the artist mentioned that they liked doodling a lot there were three-dimensional doodles floating around the room in black and white. The artists mentioned that the original plan included many other colors but over time they narrowed down to only two, black and white. The whole exhibit makes you feel like you are in space.

Synthesis / My Experience

Overall this exhibit was one of the more surprising galleries this semester, what you would usually expect is a room with various pieces of art hanging around or in the center of the room; however, this gallery was surprising because the room itself was the art. I also found it funny that the material used for the white aspect of the room were toilet seat covers. At first when entering the room I was confused about where I was allowed to go but I guess it’s all off limits. Overall it was an enjoyable gallery and I hope to see more like this.

Wk6- Artist Conversation/Story- Carmina Correa & Vanessa Olivarez

*Meme Show*
**Carmina Correa & Vanessa Olivarez**
Watercolor on canvas with Color Penciled outline
22″ x 27″
2017
CSULB School of Art, Werby Gallery

This is the only picture left I had from that era. It was a time of peace. Where there wasn’t a care in the world. That is, until that demon showed up. It all began three years ago, I was an intern at a lab where we successfully created the first portal into another galaxy. With this portal we were able to perform amazing feats. We could travel once impossible distances in a matter of seconds. One of the professors working on the portal finally decided to maximize the input to the portal where we could reach a galaxy seen from the Hubble space telescope. It was a planet in the Goldilocks zone. With conventional travel it was estimated to take a ship 12 billion years to reach. With this machine we did it in a matter of seconds. We were so preoccupied on whether we could, we never stopped and asked if we should. It was obvious that we shouldn’t have. What came out of the portal shocked us at first, it was so cute and fluffy, resembling a earth dog. Then it lunged and killed everybody in the room. Except me. After, he left only saying one phrase “pineapples belong on pizza”. After he left the portal shut down and melted into nacho cheese. This picture was pulled from the surveillance.
